WebP is the practical modern photo format: smaller than JPEG, widely supported, and able to keep transparency when you need it. Use it for pages you control. Keep a JPEG beside it only when you still serve a very old client.
This page encodes WebP locally. Quality tracks the slider the same way JPEG does. A target size is useful when a CMS rejects anything over a limit but you would rather not guess the quality number.
How to compress or create a WebP
Add any supported image
A JPEG or PNG can be saved as WebP from the output menu. An existing WebP can be recompressed, ideally from a higher-quality source.
Pick quality or a size
75–85 matches a normal web JPEG. Transparency survives WebP, so logos do not have to stay PNG if the file is still too heavy.
Download and replace
Point the page at the new file. Do not keep serving the multi-megabyte original next to it.
Where WebP earns its place
Smaller than JPEG
At a similar visual result, WebP often lands 25% or more under a careful JPEG. That is real bandwidth on a photo-heavy page.
Transparency without PNG weight
Cut-out products can be WebP instead of a giant PNG, as long as your theme actually outputs the WebP.
WebP is not always the winner
AVIF can be smaller still. A tiny icon may be smaller as an optimized PNG. Check the comparison and the file size rather than trusting the format name.
WebP versus the neighbors
| Need | Prefer |
|---|---|
| Photo on a modern site | WebP or AVIF |
| Email to anyone | JPEG |
| Tiny logo | PNG or WebP |
| Animation | GIF, or a video |
WebP compression questions
How do I compress WebP images I already exported?
Drop them here and lower the quality, or set a target size. You cannot recover detail that an earlier export already removed, so start from the JPEG or raw file when you can.
Will WebP open on phones?
Current iOS, Android and desktop browsers display WebP. Very old clients do not. For email, send JPEG.
Can WebP keep a transparent background?
Yes. Unlike JPEG, WebP has an alpha channel. Check the comparison against a non-white page if the halo matters.
Is the WebP encoder running on a server?
No. It runs in your browser. The file is not uploaded.
