PNG is the default for anything with a transparent background, which is why product cut-outs and hero graphics are so often several megabytes. WebP keeps the alpha channel and compresses the picture far better, so the cut-out stays a cut-out at a fraction of the size.
This page sets the output to WebP at quality 85. Raise it to 95 or more for logos with fine edges.
How to convert PNG to WebP
Add PNG files
Transparent and solid PNGs both work.
Choose the quality
85 for photos and cut-outs. For flat logos, try 95 and compare edges against the original.
Check the edges
Drag the comparison over the outline. A soft halo means the quality is too low for that graphic.
Where PNG to WebP helps most
Product cut-outs
Shop photos on transparent backgrounds often drop from 2–4 MB to a few hundred KB.
Large decorative graphics
Background shapes and illustrations exported as PNG shrink a lot with no visible change.
When PNG is already small
A simple icon of a few kilobytes may come out larger as WebP. The result card shows both sizes; keep the PNG when it wins. For those, the PNG compressor is the better tool.
Typical results
| PNG type | WebP result |
|---|---|
| Photo or cut-out | Much smaller |
| Illustration with gradients | Smaller |
| Tiny flat icon | Similar or larger |
PNG to WebP questions
Does WebP keep the transparent background?
Yes. WebP supports full alpha transparency, so the background stays see-through.
Can WebP be lossless like PNG?
WebP has a lossless mode. Here, quality 95–100 keeps edges essentially identical to the PNG.
Why is the WebP bigger than my PNG?
That happens with tiny, flat icons that PNG already stores efficiently. Keep the PNG in that case.
Will WebP images work in my email signature?
Some email clients still do not show WebP. Use PNG or JPG in email.
